Nepal, Shakyamuni triads

8th-9th century, Nepal, Kathmandu Valley, Buddha Preaching The First Sermon Attended by Maitreya and Padmapani (Avalokiteshvara), stone, 11,7 cm, inventory nº 1989.294 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York (USA).

The seated Buddha is flanked by two standing bodhisattvas who have a fly whisk in their right hand and their distinctive attribute in the other (a water pot for Maitreya and a lotus for Avalokiteshvara).

In this case the bodhisattvas are seated and hold flowers that support their attributes: the hilt of a sword and book for Manjushri, a wheel and a water pot for Maitreya.
