7th century, Swat Valley, brass with silver and copper inlay, at the Fondation Alain Bordier in Gruyère (Switzerland).

Avalokiteshvara in his padmani form, a long-stemmed lotus in his left hand and Amitabha in his headdress, is seated on cushion over a hassock decorated with a triangular motif (itself resting on a lotus flower) very similar to another two published in a previous post and also labelled 7th century. In this instance the bodhisattva is not wearing a sacred thread across his chest and his facial features are softer.

    • The stone buddha head is highly unlikely to be from the Himalayas, although it has the quality of nearby Gandhara works. The Asian Department of any major museum might be be able to help you. See links in left-hand column.
