Tibet, a rare Amitabha

16th century circa, Tibet, buddha Amitabha, copper alloy, private collection

16th-17th century, Tibet, buddha Amitabha, copper alloy, private collection

This statue is singular in that it allies the simplicity of the copper alloy devoid of pigment or gilding proper to earlier Tibetan works up with an elaborate lotus base which became fashionable from the 15th century onwards (due to Chinese Influence) and a richly incised garment typical of gilt sculptures produced from the 16th century onwards. (Also, it is unusual for the bowl to have been preserved).
